In today’s consumer culture, we often choose to replace over repair, but when it comes to baths, it’s not so easy. It’s not easy to dispose of an old bath, especially depending on its material. Cast-iron baths weigh a ton and have to be smashed apart to be able to carry the pieces out of your house, and this obviously causes damage to the rest of your bathroom. Acrylic baths are lighter, making removal easier, but still cause damage to your bathroom when removed. Once removed, you’ll need to re-tile around the bath, refit taps and drains, and possibly replace flooring. Restoring your bath instead of replacing it helps cut down on daily construction waste, making it a more sustainable option. Traditional metal baths are common in older houses and can last for decades with proper maintenance. When the surface of metal baths gets worn, chipped, or scratched, resurfacing makes them look brand new again, restoring strength and beauty. To ensure proper resurfacing, I use an adhesive bonder that bonds the new surface firmly to the original bath. There’s no need to remove your bath or deal with complicated transport, as all of my resurfacing work is done in-situ. You may have heard of Vitreous enamel - this is a specialised procedure where the bath is coated in a powdered glass material and then this is fused onto the surface of your bath in a large kiln at very high temperatures. Vitreous enamel resurfacing requires extreme heat, which means it can’t be done in-situ and is rarely offered by companies now.
