These days, it’s common to discard old items and buy new ones, but with baths, it’s not always that simple. When it comes to baths, getting rid of the old one isn’t a quick or easy task. With cast-iron baths, the removal process requires breaking them apart due to their weight, causing damage to your bathroom’s structure. While acrylic baths are much lighter and can be carried out more easily, it will still cause damage to the rest of your bathroom if you have it removed. Once removed, you’ll need to re-tile around the bath, refit taps and drains, and possibly replace flooring. By restoring your bath, you’re choosing an environmentally responsible option, reducing construction waste. Many older homes feature metal baths that can last a lifetime with the right care. When the surface of metal baths gets worn, chipped, or scratched, resurfacing makes them look brand new again, restoring strength and beauty. Regular paint won’t do the job for bath resurfacing; the right materials are essential for success. To ensure proper resurfacing, I use an adhesive bonder that bonds the new surface firmly to the original bath. Vitreous enamel is a specialized technique in which powdered glass is fused onto your bath at high temperatures in a kiln. I’m not aware of many companies still offering this in-situ, as the extreme heat needed makes it impossible.
